Our journey began with Doris Day almost 5 months ago to the day. I received a call on Christmas Eve asking me to take her in to our rescue as she was deemed unadoptable due to her ailments.
With great sadness and a heavy heart, Doris Day has passed away. The last few days have been rough on her as she started having a tougher time walking, her tummy was distended and she started having incontienece.
We took her to the vet today knowing tha needing to assist her in crossing the rainbow bridge was a possibly but we wanted to keep all our options open.
We had the vet give her an exam, where she found many lumps and masses on her liver and an enlarged spleen just on palpitation. Which is what was probably causes her incontienece.
I've always told Doris, If we ever have to help you pass, please give me a kiss. She never kissed or licked. Not once. Just wasn't her thing.
Today as we were making the decision, she looked me in the eyes, gave me a kiss and put her head down in my lap. That's when we knew it was her time.
She was with Alan and I, laying her head in our laps and she passed. We stayed there for awhile after she passed and let her know she was a good dog and reminisced on all her memories we'd shared over the last 5 months.
She passed with a smile on her face and at peace.
This was by far one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make in my life. The house isn't the same. It's only been a few hours since she's passed and I can't stop crying.
Please keep Alan and I in your thoughts, prayers and positive vibes for our pack and ourselves.
If you'd like to donate towards her final medical costs, please do. It'll go into our fund to help senior dogs pass with dignity and not in the shelter.
Until we meet again Doris Day, thank you for showing us that older dogs so have life left to be lived and plenty of love left to be given!
